  • Restaurant news: New hot dog eatery coming to Collingswood

by Julia Hays on August 27th, 2009 | Comment

    Restaurant news in South Jersey:

Philly's Texas Wieners brings its brand of hot dog to the LumberYard development in Collingswood next month. The Snyder Avenue chain, around since 1923, will occupy the former Sportz Dogz, which lasted less than a year.

Yamato Japanese Restaurant, a longstanding fixture at Voorhees' Eagle Plaza, also has closed, a [...]

Collingswood channels creativity into TV shows

    By LAVINIA DECASTRO Courier-Post Staff

Step aside, Hollywood. Collingswood TV is moving beyond the usual public access programming of Little League games, government meetings and municipal events and producing regularly scheduled shows with a local flavor.

  • Police as pedestrian decoys

by Julia Hays on August 13th, 2009 | Comment

    Avi Steinhardt/Courier-Post

Collingswood is among several South Jersey communities that now have police officers acting as pedestrian decoys to enforce traffic laws.

For more information on the program, read the Courier-Post article or click here to view a photo gallery of the undercover cops in action.

Years ago we encouraged pedestrians to use their heads with slogans like, “Cross at the green, but not in between.” Now pedestrians, brazenly walk out in front of moving cars with the attitude, “If you hit me, I’ll sue you and own your home.” Sure, pedestrians have the “right of way”, but lets have a little common sense in applying the law!

What about the cops that fly through the 25MPH street just because they can.

    • MrsRef 2:29 pm on August 17, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I think Collingswood needs to reconsider where they have their cross-walks Half of them are located between parked cars and poorly or not lit at night. They also need to ticket those who jay-walk without the benefit of the crosswalks. Sometimes I cannot stop because when I drive the 25 mph speed limit, some idiot is tailgating me so close that if I stop, I will surely be rear-ended. I agree with the poster above, people just walk right out in front of you without looking to see if you can safely stop, especially in front of the Station House office complex.

      • x 1:15 pm on September 18, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Then perhaps you should slow down when approaching a crosswalk so that when you reach it you have the ability to stop in time.

“I need to break the law because the person behind me is an idiot” is poor excuse.

Sounds like a cop responding to that one above!!!

Why cant people just use their brains and look both ways before crossing? Oh wait because then that would put some of the responsibility on them.

And while we are at it lets try and have the local police Haddon Twp, and Collingswood stop using their cell phones while on duty. I agree 100% with the no phone laws but why is it cops can still do it, or anyone in a township vehicle for that matter.

And while I’m on the subject of the local police, why is it that they are all so young? Last year they were running the Keg parties in the woods and now this year they are chasing the same kids they hung with, because Mommy and Daddy know so and so and now they are a Big Bad Police Man. Give me a freaking break, half these cops haven’t earned the respect the expect!

Dont get me wrong I support all police and fireman who put their life on the line to protect us. But some of these guys are a joke!

          Ok, End of Rant!

You are Colls spoiled. Dont know how good you have it. Where I work you call the police and maybe you see them 20 minutes later. Maybe you want us to hire senior citizens for the force.

I agree with the person who remarked about the cops flying down the streets at night – not only is it the police but it’s a bunch of kids who are joyriding and no one’s checking it out. They fly thru stop signs and sometimes there are young children out taking walks with their parents in the evening. Instead of the police wasting taxpayers money pretending to be pedestrians and busting people on the avenue for jaywalking or other ridiculous charges, they should be monitoring other areas of this town. I know, my family’s cars have been the target of vandalism 3 times this year and it’s caused major damage that we’ve had to pay for. We reported it and nothing was ever done; no extra patrols were put on…i just don’t get it! And we just got our tax bill and it went up 11% for this year. Unbelieveable! I know we’ll be selling our property and moving on very shortly! I used to love this town!

    • MrsRef 7:54 am on September 19, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Thanks for the suggestion but I do drive slowly thru town. Explain the logic of putting a place for pedestrians to cross located between two parked cars. Sometimes all you see is a baby carriage coming at you. They should also cracked down on jaywalkers.

      • x 4:03 pm on September 21, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I agree that there should be no parking zones on both sides of the crosswalk. This is a good point, but does not dismiss your claim that you “cannot stop” at the crosswalk. You need to drive at a speed that will allow you to do so or consider giving up your license as to no longer endanger Collingswood’s pedestrians.

    • MrsRef 4:21 pm on September 21, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I DO STOP at the crosswalks – in fact, I drive so slowly down Haddon Avenue that people ride the bumper of my car all the way from Haddon Twp. to Browning Road. I never claimed that I couldn’t and don’t stop at the crosswalks. Maybe the police resources would have been better used down near the WaWa where people jay-walk constantly or maybe at night when people are breaking into cars and houses!!!!!!!!!!!

      • I Smell Bacon 11:43 pm on December 14, 2009 Permalink | Reply

Hold on now lets be fair about this, the police are always at the Wawa, on Haddon and Cuthbert and in Collingswood. They are always there getting their FREE coffee.

I love how they get to park in the Handicapped parking spots and in the Fire lanes And how the signs clearly state no idling, yet the police can do what ever they feel like doing. At any given time there are 3-4 cops supposedly on duty in either of the Wawa’s.

I guess Wawa is one of the safest local places a person could be, If I’m ever going to have a heart attack I’ll make sure it’s in a Wawa.

Give me a Freaking Break, I know that crap don’t happen in our 2 towns here, but damn at least act like your working or something!

    • 1/2FULL 10:42 am on November 28, 2009 Permalink | Reply

We all need to slow down, the police need to put as much effort into jay walkers as they do to drivers. Jay walking kids need to be doing community service for the town as a payback not their parents. Adult jay walkers need to be fined or do community service, no excuses for friends, family or politicians. Police need to slow down & obay the same laws as everyone else they don’t have special priviledges or excuses. The cross walks need to have at least one parking spot on each side cleared even if it means less parking for buisness. In saying all that these are just common sence solutions to a problem. The town of Collingswood is a town to be proud of & enjoy & these can all be accomblished without a large cost to the towns people.

I love our town, and I love that we have so many marked crosswalks (some with crossing guards!), so it upsets me very much when people ignore them – whether they be on foot or in their car. There are what, EIGHT crosswalks btw Holy Trinity and the Wawa? And yet people will not walk the extra 10 feet to use them. They insist on walking out in front of cars on one of the busiest strips in the area. It’s irresponsible and stupid.
