Pieces of whimsy: Jewelry artist offers wearable art
Debra Adelsons jewelry looks as if she carved it out of beach glass.
She doesnt. The Collingswood artists bangles, pendants, rings and brooches feature geometric acrylic shapes inset with sparkling semi-precious gemstones and sterling silver.
"I really love working with the acrylic," said Adelson, who once designed jewelry for companies in New York. "It allows me to use big elements of color. I can shape it, heat it, form it and mold it to any shape I want. I can make substantial pieces and its not heavy. Its just really durable and light and affordable."
She first started using acrylic a decade ago to make bright and functional tableware and candlesticks, but turned her attention to jewelry because, she said, "you can only redesign salad forks for so long."
