  • S.J. is in the market for ‘a Saturday treat’ [video]

by Julia Hays on May 1st, 2010 | Comment

When Jane Caputi and her 5-year-old son Seamus Murphy were nearly finished at Collingswood Farmers Market, their bags were filled with kettle corn, peach cider, spinach, herbs, cookies and plants, but they had one more stop to make.

"They ran out of apple cider doughnuts earlier, so we have to grab some that just came in," said Caputi, of Collingswood, walking toward the Cherry Hill Springdale Farms booth.

Hundreds of patrons from Camden County and the South Jersey area were soaking in the sun at the borough's first market of the season on Saturday morning.

Vendors sold produce, baked goods, plants and crafts. Balloons and live music added to the atmosphere that felt more like a festival than a market.

"It's a gorgeous day for it," Caputi said. "This is our special thing. It's a Saturday treat."

Woodstown's A.T. Buzby Farm, one of the market regulars, had run out of their 175 quarts of strawberries by 10 a.m. and spent the rest of the morning selling asparagus, rhubarbs and plants.

"Every year we come back, and it's like a corner deli, we have a group of regulars who are ready to see us," said Jim Daily, of the Woodstown farm.

A few miles away, Haddonfield's much smaller farmers market was also celebrating its first Saturday of the season.

"The most popular item for this time of year is asparagus. It just came out," said Henry Benton of Haynicz's Orchard View Farm Market and Greenhouse in Monroeville. "Our farm specializes in peaches and apples."

The Haddonfield market doesn't feature only produce.

Harry Gale's business is organic coffee. Harry & Beans of Ocean View specializes in unique blends, and Gale now has a blend just for the town: "Haddonfield High-Test."

"It's based on being here and seeing what people like and ask for," Gale said. "I noticed that they go for the Ethiopian, Honduran and Colombian. They're some strong blends."

Patricia Baxter of Voorhees was a first-time vendor at the Haddonfield market. Her business, Baxter Bakes, was selling eco-friendly chocolate chip cookies.

"I've always loved Haddonfield, and it's the perfect market, because the people here appreciate eco-friendly, local products," said Baxter, whose business is based in Philadelphia.

Collingswood's farmers market is held every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. to noon between Collings and Irvin avenues under the PATCO tracks.

Haddonfield's market is held Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon in the Presbyterian Church parking lot on Chestnut Street, just off Kings Highway.

the only downfall to this nice arrangement is the impact on the already struggling local business, who are not allowed to attend the farmers market, instead business from out side the collingswood area, such as springdale farms mentioned above are allowed to come.

solution = colls businesses plus farmers. their is no reason that any collingswood business that would like to participate should be excluded.
“collingswood its where you want to be” EXCEPT FOR SMALL BUSINESS.

  • Should the Farmers Market’s bizarro layout become permanent?

    IMG_3025

I've thought about this long and hard. Didn't want to jump to any conclusions on Saturday, right after getting home from the Collingswood Farmers Market. But now that I've had a few days to let it marinate, it's clear to me that the new, bizarro, Patco-required layout of the Market is actually an improvement.

Corn is something you can imagine being sold during a late night info-mercial, sandwiched between ShamWow and the Snuggie.

    "It has a million uses!"

    "It's great for all ages!"

"It comes in a can and can double as a doorstop!"

Realistically, as the Jersey crop goes, "It's just so [...]

  • Gear up for Saturday’s Farmer’s Market

    by W. Rhodes on June 25th, 2009 | Comment

Time to gear up for this Saturday's Farmer's Market:

Expect good weather (finally!) Look for blueberries, raspberries (of a variety of colors), cherries, string beans, scallions, pickling kirbys, mushrooms (of all kinds) and more... Great Harvest Bread Co. makes another nod for Pineapple Zucchini Bread and Chocolate Zucchini Bread. (Note: Last [...]

Chance of rain. Yeah, I know. The weather gods hate us. You might have to take advantage of that PATCO rail canopy. Look out for cherries, kielbasa, stuffed jalapenos, spinach feta bread and pepperoni bread. Cooking demos are back! Make it to the market by 10 a.m. [...]

  • Colls Farmer’s Market YouTubes a video

Yes, a YouTube video. I think this is a great idea when vying for the "America's Favorite Farmer's Market" title. (Vote for Collingswood here.) I was kinda hoping for some man-on-the-street-like interviews and more commentary to go along with the bustling market b-roll, but pretty impressive for self-proclaimed first timers.

As a Haddonfield resident, it pains me to say this, but my town’s farmer’s market doesn’t hold a candle to Collingswood’s. Easily one of the top 5 farmers markets I’ve been to anywhere.

      • W. Rhodes 11:36 pm on June 15, 2009 Permalink | Reply

I haven’t been to the Haddonfield one yet. Collingswood sates my fresh produce needs just fine.
